FRANCISCAN - International Congregation of religious Catholic women who live the Gospel way of life as Saint Francis of Assisi.

WHO IS SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI? A radical reformer of the 13th century in Italy whose passionate commitment to Christ led him to a life of utter poverty in the service of the poor. Inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi, the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood (FMDM) reach out to care for the poor, sick and dying.

MISSIONARIES - a willingness to be sent anywhere realizing that all people, whether living in our own country, across national or cultural boundaries, sharing the joy, the pain and the suffering of our brothers and sisters wherever.

DIVINE MOTHERHOOD - Encouraging the birthing of new life in Christ by being a channel of God's maternal love, helping others to recognize the loving presence of God in their daily experiences. Sharing in Mary's divine motherhood especially to those most vulnerable in today's world include the family, children and women.

OUR MISSION - sharing the joy, pain and suffering of our brothers and sisters, especially the poor, sick and dying, the marginalized. Healthcare was one of the many ways in which the Congregation tries to fulfill its mission, hence Mount Alvernia Hospital, which was built as a Catholic Hospital in 1961.

WHERE ARE WE? England, Scotland, Ireland, Rome, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia.

FMDM Charism

The spirit expressed in our title of Divine Motherhood touches the heart of our call to be women of the Gospel. As Mary conceived Christ in her womb and brought him forth for the world, so we are called to conceive Christ in our hearts and bring him forth for our world today. This means nurturing the life of Christ among the people we serve as well as recognizing the face of Christ in every person we meet. In this way, a continual cycle is created of conceiving, birthing and nurturing the Christ-Life in our daily lives.

Our Emblem

Mary's role is to bring the Saviour, Jesus Christ, into the world.

Mary therefore, conscious of this universal role,

graciously offers her Son to the world.

She is not keeping him to herself in a tender embrace.

The Christ-child in his turn

- inseparable from his mother

- has his arms outstretched to reach out and to welcome all peoples.

It is a missionary attitude the FMDM Sisters have chose to imitate.
